U.S.-UZBEKISTAN JOINT COMMISSION BEING CREATED.

Following Uzbek foreign minister Abdulaziz Komilov’s visit to Washington, the State Department has announced a decision to create a U.S.-Uzbekistan intergovernmental commission that will begin functioning this autumn. Washington has thus far established such commissions only with Russia and Ukraine. As with those countries, the U.S.-Uzbek commission will coordinate political, economic, and military cooperation. In announcing the decision, the State Department described the development of bilateral U.S.-Uzbek relations as important for Central Asia as a whole. (Western agencies, June 13)
