MAY DAY HOLIDAY MARKED.
Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 85
The festival of workers’ solidarity is being celebrated in Russia — but with some differences. In Moscow, Mayor Yuri Luzhkov has renamed it "Kindness Day" (Den dobra) and is treating Muscovites to a day’s free travel on the metro, the BBC reported. The Communist party organized rallies in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other major Russian cities. All rallies have been banned in the Chechen capital, Grozny. Pravda’s weekly supplement marked the occasion by reviving the traditional May Day slogans. "Freedom for Boris Yeltsin!" they declaim. "Release him from his presidential shackles!" And, "Show humanity, Russians! Make June 16 the day Boris Yeltsin takes the retirement he deserves!" (Pravda-V, April 19 & 26)
