NUCLEAR WASTE RISK EXCEEDS CHERNOBYL.

Thousands of spent nuclear fuel assemblies and tons of other radioactive waste from the Russian northern fleet pose radiation risks far exceeding those of Chernobyl, researchers said yesterday. Thomas Nilsen, co-author of a report on Russian nuclear dumps, singled out the Andreev Bay storage site on the Kola peninsula as among the worst. "The amount of radiation in this facility is several hundred times more than it was inside the reactor of Chernobyl," he told reporters. Nilson works for the Norwegian government-backed environment group Bellona Foundation. Bellona has been active for some time in the Kola area. Russia’s Federal Security Service currently seeks to incriminate the ecologists by accusing them of spying against Russia at the behest of Western intelligence services. (3)
