DUMA DROPS IMPEACHMENT AND NO-CONFIDENCE MOTIONS FROM ITS AGENDA.

On Thursday the Duma dropped the idea of debating the proposed motion on impeaching president Boris Yeltsin and the proposed no-confidence motion against the government of Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin from its agenda. The impeachment proposal had been advanced by Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov, who also said that he had enough signatures to initiate impeachment proceedings. But a majority of the Duma lost interest in the proposals. The outcome was greatly influenced by the decisions of several nationalist factions to oppose the measure. Vladimir Zhirinovsky and Stanislav Govorukhin (leaders of the hardline nationalist Liberal Democratic and Democratic parties in the Duma) made clear that they would not support any confrontation with the executive branch.
