GERMANS GIVE SHEVARDNADZE AN ARMORED CAR.

According to local reports, Georgian head of state Eduard Shevardnadze has just received an armored car as a present from the German government. The present is, according to the reports, accompanied by a letter from German foreign minister Klaus Kinkel expressing concern over Shevardnadze’s personal safety in the wake of the August 29 assassination attempt against him, and recalling Germany’s debt of gratitude to Shevardnadze for his role as USSR foreign minister in facilitating the peaceful German unification. Shevardnadze’s personal safety was also of concern to the U.S. government which helped train the Georgian leader’s security squad following his return to power in Georgia in 1992. That assistance program came to light after U.S. security specialist Fred Woodruff was murdered during his assignment in Georgia.
