KGB DISSIDENT OFFICER WILL STAY IN PRISON.

The Moscow city court has rejected an appeal to release from custody former KGB captain Viktor Orekhov, who was recently sentenced to three years in prison for illegal possession of a weapon. Orekhov had been sentenced in Brezhnev’s era to eight years in prison for helping political dissidents. In the 1990s, Orekhov continued his human rights activity and made public the methods and techniques of the former KGB. When he was arrested a second time last July, Russian human rights organizations stated that they saw this arrest as revenge for his revelations of KGB crimes. Orekhov’s lawyer appealed for his release, but the appeals court left the initial sentence unchanged.
