At the inaugural news conferenceof his presidential party, Moldovan president Mircea Snegur calledfor transforming Moldova into a presidential republic "becausea parliamentary republic talks too much about problems withoutsolving them… and because security matters are now discussedby too many people," Moldovan agencies reported August 30.Snegur also called for the establishment of a bicameral parliament,one of whose chambers he would be able to fill by appointment.And he suggested that his political rival Prime Minister AndreiSangheli "might have to resign" since he and his governmenthad failed to carry through economic reforms, this despite thepraise international financial institutions have given to Sangheli’sactions in this area.
