Communist-backed candidate Vadim Gusto has been declared the victor of the gubernatorial election held in Leningrad oblast on Sunday. But the pro-Yeltsin incumbent governor won the other gubernatorial election held that day, in Rostov oblast in southern Russia. (Itar-Tass, September 30) In addition, the Communist candidate has finally been declared the winner of the disputed gubernatorial election held on September 22 in Amur oblast in Russia’s Far East. The latest results mean that Communists and pro-Yeltsin candidates are neck and neck in this fall’s series of gubernatorial elections: so far, each side has two victories.
