PRESS UNFREEDOM IN MOLDOVA.

Today’s government newspaper Moldova Suverana reports that General Prosecutor’s Office representatives came to the editorial office to demand disclosure of the sources of recent stories on President Mircea Snegur’s effort to establish personal control over the army. The newspaper has published Snegur’s six recent orders under which the president personally takes over almost all of defense minister Pavel Creanga’s functions. The orders have been common knowledge in military ranks. The chief editor writes in today’s issue that the prosecutors are threatening him with criminal proceedings for disclosure of state secrets, unless he reveals his sources. The newspaper is generally critical of Snegur’s drive for personal rule.
