BELARUS PRESIDENT TO CURB OFFICIAL TRAVEL ABROAD.

In a televised speech calling for "severe economy measures," Belarus president Aleksandr Lukashenko warned that he will require government and parliamentary officials to apply for presidential approval for any trip abroad. Lukashenko targeted primarily the members of parliament for allegedly wishing to travel abroad "at the people’s expense;" and described the parliament as "trouble-making" and "a running sore." (Interfax, July 1). Lukashenko’s warning is not his first and forms part of his effort to isolate officials in general and parliamentary deputies in particular from the West.
