TAJIK GOVERNMENT PRESSED ON THREE FRONTS.

The Tajik opposition announced over the weekend that its forces had withstood another attack by government forces in central Tajikistan’s Tavildara district. They claimed to have destroyed three government armored vehicles and one helicopter. The opposition also appealed for international assistance to the approximately 300 government soldiers captured by its forces in Tavildara during the current campaign. Some of the wounded prisoners have died for lack of medicine, the announcement said. In the Garm area, also in central Tajikistan, the government announced the capture of a group of seven opposition fighters who had recently mounted hit-and-run attacks on Internal Ministry troops there.

In eastern Tajikistan’s Badakhshan region, the opposition seized a group of senior officials of the Dushanbe-appointed regional administration and offered to exchange them for a field commander captured by government troops. The retaliatory seizure illustrates the relative ease with which opposition forces operate in Badakhshan.
