ZHIRINOVSKY MAY RUN FOR GOVERNOR.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, may run for governor of Leningrad Oblast, according to Aleksei Mitrofanov, deputy leader of the party’s faction in the Duma. The post has fallen vacant following the appointment of Vadim Gustov as first deputy premier in charge of regional policy. Zhirinovsky has not yet commented on the rumor (Russian agencies, September 23). A member of Zhirinovsky’s party has since 1996 been governor of Pskov Oblast, which borders on Leningrad Oblast. Analysts have predicted that Zhirinovsky’s party is unlikely to do well in the next parliamentary elections, due at the end of next year. If Zhirinovsky himself is not on the slate, the party is likely to be all but obliterated.
