Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 95

Japanese and Russian experts analyzing the bow section of the Russian oil tanker Nakhodka have reached different preliminary conclusions as to the reasons for the January 2 wreck of the ship off Japan’s coast. A Japanese panel on May 6 cited the ship’s age as the reason for its breakup. The Russian side continues to advance the argument that the ship went down as the result of a collision with some unknown, half-submerged object. (Kyodo, May 6; Itar-Tass, May 12)
