SECURITY COUNCIL DRAFTS RECOMMENDATIONS ON PRIGORODNY DISTRICT.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 145

Russia’s Security Council has prepared a draft presidential decree to settle the Ossetian-Ingush conflict in North Ossetia’s Prigorodny district. The Security Council’s first deputy secretary, Mikhail Mityukov, does not rule out that a meeting could take place between Boris Yeltsin and the presidents of Ingushetia and North Ossetia, Ruslan Aushev and Akhsarbek Galazov. But the Security Council rejected Aushev’s appeal for the introduction of direct presidential rule in Prigorodny. Aushev has now begun to call instead for the dispatch of peacekeeping troops from Russia’s Interior Ministry to the conflict zone in order to guarantee the safety of Ingush returnees.
