In sharp contrast to Soviet times, fewer than 20,000 people took part in unofficial May Day celebrations in Moscow, Interfax said. Led by diehard communists, the demonstrators carried signs calling for the restoration of the Soviet Union and for a war on crime and corruption. Elsewhere in the Russian Federation, there were small demonstrations in St. Petersburg, Vladivostok and a number of smaller cities. No clashes with the police were reported. For most Russians, May Day was just another spring day off. Reflecting the new spirit of the times, Moskovskie novosti suggested some possible May Day slogans for the new age. Among them: “Television Producers! Stop Interrupting Our Favorite Commercials with Bad Programs!”
