YELTSIN WOOS FIGS.
Publication: Monitor Volume: 1 Issue: 38
On June 21, Boris Yeltsin hosted a meeting of the leaders of the country’s financial-industrial groups (FIGs) to underscore his alliance with these groups, which were organized by his decree in December 1993, Kommersant-Daily reported June 22. The FIGs control much of the activity in the country’s regions, and are dependent on the Russian president for much of their authority. The business paper noted that these groups would like Moscow to follow a South Korean-style of government-industry cooperation but noted that unlike Seoul, Moscow lacks the funds to make this happen.
