UZBEKISTAN DEVELOPING LINKS WITH NATO.

Uzbek president Islam Karimov conferred with NATO secretary-general Javier Solana and other top officials of the alliance at its Brussels headquarters. The talks focused on Central Asian security, Uzbekistan’s participation in NATO’s Partnership for Peace program, the Central Asian Battalion (CAB) created by Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, and planned PfP and CAB exercises. In an interview with the Brussels daily Le Soir, Karimov came out "against turning the CIS into a political-military bloc or creating supranational CIS institutions." He also spoke "against the chauvinist and imperialist tendencies sometimes noticeable in Russia." (Interfax, November 13-14)
