U.S. BOTCHED GALKIN ARREST.

A U.S. Justice Department official admitted yesterday that the CIA and FBI had bungled a recent case involving the arrest of Aleksandr Galkin, a former Soviet spy. The CIA had reportedly been informed but had not objected strenuously enough to block the FBI’s plans to arrest Galkin. Subsequent protestations and threats of retaliation by Moscow forced the U.S. into an embarrassing retreat that resulted in Galkin’s release. (Reuter, November 21)
