Watch the Video: Willy Wo-Lap Lam in Conversation with Peter Martin
About the Event
In recent weeks, news has continued to emerge of corruption at the highest levels of the People’s Liberation Army. Senior military cadres in the equipment procurement departments and the Rocket Force have been investigated, several of whom have been purged. These are in addition to thousands of officials investigated for violations by discipline inspection and supervision agencies over the course of 2023. Meanwhile, Xi Jinping continues to be ruthless in his efforts to bind the Party and the PLA to his will. As Xi’s China deepens its commitment to military preparedness and strengthens Party control of the economy and society, the stakes for understanding China in 2024 are high.
The Jamestown Foundation held an event with Senior Fellow Dr. Willy Wo-Lap Lam and Peter Martin of Bloomberg News. Dr. Lam put these recent events into context, and discussed his latest book, Xi Jinping: The Hidden Agendas of China’s Ruler for Life, recently published by Routledge. At the event, Dr. Lam discuss his work, provided critical insights on recent developments in China, and shared his thinking on what to expect for 2024, finishing with a Q&A.
