NATO is transitioning from reassurance measures to a more serious deterrence posture on the Alliance’s Eastern flank vis-à-vis Russia. On March 23, Jamestown Senior Fellow Vladimir Socor presented on Romania, the Black Sea and the strategic implications of this transition, focusing on three points:

• NATO’s varied approach to the Northern and Southern sectors of the Alliance’s Eastern flank
• Romania’s role as the Euro-Atlantic pillar in the Black Sea region
• NATO and U.S. bilateral security commitments in the Black Sea focused on Romania
