AIDS VIRUS SPREADING IN RUSSIA.

The number of reported cases of HIV infection has doubled in Russia over the past year and could reach 100,000 by the year 2000, according to the head of the Russian AIDS Center. Vadim Pokrovsky said twice as many people became infected with the HIV virus, which causes AIDS, during the first half of 1996 as in the same period in 1995. At the end of 1995, Russia had 1,269 reported cases of HIV infection. (UPI, ORT, July 22)
