ARMENIAN PRESIDENT CLAIMS VICTORY, OPPOSITION REJECTS RETURNS.
Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 177
Incumbent Armenian president Levon Ter-Petrosian yesterday evening claimed victory in the September 22 presidential election. As he spoke, returns from most of the country showed him leading the opposition bloc’s candidate, Vazgen Manukian, by 56 to 37 percent. Manukian had carried Yerevan, but Ter-Petrosian was more than making up that loss in the countryside, according to the Central Election Commission’s returns. The opposition staged a mass demonstration in central Yerevan last night, accusing the authorities of massive fraud in the vote count. Manukian and other opposition leaders vowed further protest actions and called for Ter-Petrosian’s resignation. (Noyan-Tapan, September 23)
