ARMENIAN PRESIDENT RESISTS INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE ON KARABAKH SETTLEMENT.

Armenian president Levon Ter-Petrosian told a congress of his ruling Armenian All-National Movement that Armenia can not accept a rigid application of the principles of the territorial integrity of states as the basis for settling the Karabakh conflict. A solution proceeding from those principles "could lead to repressive actions and genocide against Karabakh Armenians, which Armenia can not allow," Ter-Petrosian said, reaffirming that Armenia seeks a solution based on the right of peoples to self-determination.
The president acknowledged that his position runs counter to the international consensus and that Russia can "hardly support it in view of its own many potential Karabakhs." Yet Ter-Petrosian described current Armenian-Russian relations as "the best in the last 300 years." (Interfax, Noyan-Tapan, June 10). Armenia’s presidential election is scheduled for September. The competing political forces all support Karabakh’s separation from Azerbaijan.
