Yesterday in Ankara, Azerbaijan and Turkey signed an agreement on military cooperation. The pact is said to include technical assistance and training, as well as other programs. The Azerbaijani delegates termed the agreement an "historic milestone" for the country and a step toward developing its own armed forces. Turkey’s chief of staff Ismail Hakki Karadayi said that Azerbaijan "with its strategic location and oil deposits has emerged as a very important country." Turkish defense minister Oltan Sungurlu said that the agreement would serve to promote stability in the Transcaucasus. (Anatolia news agency as cited by Western agencies, June 10)
