In an interview summarized in the February 1 issue of the New York Times, oligarch-in-exile Boris Berezovsky underscored that “he was just weeks away from laying out documentary evidence that Russia’s security services were involved in apartment-house explosions in September 1999 that killed 300 people” and which served as a justification for the second Russian invasion of Chechnya. Berezovsky stressed that his evidence “is no less than the evidence the United States has that Osama bin Laden was responsible for the World Trade Center attack.” Earlier, on January 25, the director of the FSB, Nikolai Patrushev, had announced that “his agency had substantial evidence that Berezovsky had financed rebel groups in Chechnya and that a criminal case would be opened accordingly” (Gazeta.ru, January 31).
