BREAKUP OF INTER-TAJIK TALKS OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 76

Contrary to a claim made by Dushanbe, inter-Tajik negotiations in Tehran did not resume yesterday. Instead, Iran confirmed today the breakup of the talks, and Foreign Minister Aliakbar Velayati unilaterally told Russia’s official news agency that negotiations would resume in Tehran next month. (Itar-Tass, April 17) In fact, this round of talks had been suspended from its first day, April 9, because of arrests and executions of Tajik opposition supporters. Russian, Iranian, and UN pressure on the opposition failed to restart the talks. (See Monitor, April 16)
