In their responsesto the speech, Duma deputies attacked the premier because Russianincomes have fallen by 30 percent over the last year. The deputiesalso claimed that Moscow is following orders from Western banksrather than reflecting the wishes of the Russian people, and thatthe 1996 Russian budget will do little to help the Russian peopleor even the Russian economy. Many suggested that inflation wouldrise rather than fall in the coming months, and warned of a socialexplosion unless the government changes its policies or is replaced.Several deputies repeated their calls for yet another no confidencevote in the government.
