Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 87

The controversial commander of Russia’s Far Eastern Military District is reported to be a candidate for the vacant post of ground forces commander in chief. Col. Gen. Viktor Chechevatov, said to be friendly with Boris Yeltsin, would succeed Army Gen. Vladimir Semenov, who was relieved of the post after a months-long dispute with the Defense Ministry. (See Perspective item below) Chechevatov was earlier reputed to be a candidate for defense minister, despite being the object of corruption rumors. (Interfax, April 28; Kommersant-daily, April 29)
