CHERNOMYRDIN: NO CHANGE IN POLICY, NO CABINET RE-SHUFFLE.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 1 Issue: 158

After meeting with President Yeltsin yesterday to discuss the outcome of Sunday’s parliamentary elections, Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin announced that he would be making no changes to either the cabinet or the economic policies of his government. Communist party leader Gennady Zyuganov has called for the government’s resignation, but an aide to Chernomyrdin pointed out that the prime minister is appointed by the president. The aide said communist parliamentary gains no more obliged Yeltsin to replace the Russian government than a change in the balance of congressional forces required US President Clinton to bring Republicans into his cabinet.
