COMMUNIST ACCUSES SHUMEIKO AND SOSKOVETS OF CORRUPTION

Viktor Ilyukhin, one of the Communist faction’s leaders in the Duma and chairman of its Committee on Security Affairs, has accused Federation Council speaker Vladimir Shumeiko of laundering his money in a pyramid scheme. According to Ilyukhin, recently-arrested Valentina Solovieva, who had operated one such pyramid scheme, has admitted that Shumeiko and his wife were active partners in her business. Anywhere from one to four trillion rubles passed through the Solovieva network of front companies, part of which allegedly belonged to the Shumeikos, Ilyukhin charged. He remarked that Shumeiko’s name had already appeared in several other criminal cases. And he further charged that first deputy prime minister Oleg Soskovets was another participant in Solovieva’s operation. (3)
