The table included in the January 9 edition of Russia’s Week overstated the percentage of ethnic Russians in Latvia’s population. The first secretary of the Latvian embassy in Helsinki sent us information from Latvia’s Board of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, which counts 687,205 Russians among Latvia’s 2,349,468 people, for a share of 29.2 percent. This information is dated July 1, 2001, and the first secretary says that since then “the figure for ethnic Russians in Latvia is not likely to have gone up… it is more likely to have gone down.”
