Russia’s Supreme Court on Monday ruled in favor of the "Democratic Russia"/Free Trade Union bloc in its case against the Central Electoral Commission. (4) The group, which led by famous former dissidents Gleb Yakunin, Galina Starovoitova, and Lev Ponomarev, had brought suit against the election authorities for refusing on October 22 to accept its documents for registration on grounds of tardiness. Its advocate in court, Andrei Frolov, argued that while the Commission had the best interests of Russian citizens in mind in trying to limit the number of blocs entering the race, it acted unlawfully in the specific case of "Democratic Russia"/Free Trade Unions. (5) The Court’s favorable ruling should raise hopes among refuseniks Yabloko and Derzhava in their forthcoming cases against the Commission.
