DEADLY ATTACKS ON RUSSIAN SOLDIERS.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 4 Issue: 178

At least three Russian soldiers were killed and ten were wounded in two separate incidents in Abkhazia yesterday. Mines had been laid in the path of their vehicles in both cases. The commander of Russian troops in Abkhazia, Major-General Sergey Korobko, charged that Georgian guerrillas were continuing a “mine war” against Russian troops and Abkhaz authorities (Russian agencies, September 28).

The last three months have seen a spate of such attacks. In Tbilisi, however, Internal Affairs Minister Kakha Targamadze stated that the reputed Georgian guerrilla groups “White Legion” and “Forest Brothers” do not exist in reality. They are, he said, are only propaganda “myths” (Itar-Tass, September 25).
