Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 217

FBI director Louis Freeh, launching a four-day official visit to Russia, held separate meetings in Moscow yesterday with Nikolai Kovalev, the chief of Russia’s Federal Security Service, and with Russian Security Council secretary Ivan Rybkin. Freeh’s visit is to be devoted to Russian-U.S. cooperation in fighting international organized crime, terrorism, and drug trafficking. (AP, November 18) Moscow has in recent weeks objected to charges, voiced in the U.S. and elsewhere, that Russian organized crime represents a growing and important challenge for law enforcement agencies around the world.
