IBM TO STOP PRODUCING COMPUTERS IN RUSSIA.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 42

International Business Machines will stop making personal computers in Russia. The decision, which is seen as a serious setback to Russian attempts to attract foreign investment, is said to be prompted by the fact that the Russian parliament has stripped IBM of previous tax exemptions on imported components. In addition, special concessions allow certain Russian trading companies to import computers free of tariffs and taxes and therefore to offer their products at substantially cheaper prices than those made locally. IBM has been making computers at its plant outside Moscow since 1993. (2)
