Ukrainianpresident Leonid Kuchma told a July 10 news conference that Kievwill send a delegation to Chisinau to discuss how Ukraine canbecome involved in the settlement of the Dniestr conflict, Interfax-Ukrainereported. Kuchma’s announcement is a response to a recent requestby Moldovan president Mircea Snegur and Transdniestr leader IgorSmirnov that Ukraine get involved. Chisinau would welcome a Ukrainianrole in mediating the negotiations, the peacekeeping operation,and co-guaranteeing an eventual political settlement; Tiraspolgoes along as a precaution against a possible withdrawal of Russiantroops.
