Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 101
During a one-day meeting in Wisconsin yesterday German chancellor Helmut Kohl endorsed Boris Yeltsin for reelection and U.S. president Bill Clinton expressed strong support for the Russian incumbent. Clinton, who has said he wishes to avoid interfering in Russian internal affairs, gave what was described as one of his most explicit statements yet in support of Yeltsin. The two leaders also said they hoped recent developments in Chechnya would lead to the conclusion of fighting there. (Reuter, May 23)
