KUCHMA MEETS THE POPE.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 1 Issue: 3

Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma met with Pope John Paul II to discuss the return of Roman Catholic Church property confiscated by the Soviet authorities, the possibility of a papal visit to Ukraine, and interfaith relations in Eastern Europe, DPA reported May 2. The property issue remains contentious, the pope is reluctant to go to Kiev unless he can also go to Moscow, and the question of relations between Rome and the Eastern Orthodox is very much on the pope’s mind. On the same day he issued a 60-page encyclical entitled “The Light From the East” calling for broader cooperation between the two branches of Christianity.
