KYRGYZSTAN SECONDS PROPOSAL FOR CENTRAL ASIAN PEACEKEEPING FORCE.

Addressing the U.N. General Assembly, Kyrgyz foreign minister Rosa Otunbayeva came out in favor of the establishment of a Central Asian peacekeeping force, under U.N. aegis, to be made up of Kazakh, Uzbek, and Kyrgyz units, to deal with conflicts in the region. Otunbayeva also called for making Central Asia a nuclear-free zone. (19) The proposal for a joint peacekeeping force of the three countries, first submitted to the current General Assembly session by Kazakh foreign minister Kasymzhomart Tokayev (see Monitor, October 2) would have the effect of formalizing the decline in Russia’s role in Central Asia’s security arrangements.
