Krasnoyarsk Krai Governor Aleksandr Lebed says he intends to visit Chechnya. During his campaign for the governorship earlier this year, Lebed had promised to do his best to restore peace to Russia’s troubled North Caucasus. The immediate purpose of the upcoming visit, however, is believed to be to conclude an economic agreement between Krasnoyarsk Krai and the government of Chechnya. Yesterday, in the German city of Wiesbaden, Lebed received a prize for brokering the 1996 cease-fire that ended Russia’s war in Chechnya. (ORT, June 25)
