LUZHKOV SUES CHUBAIS FOR COMMENTS ON MOSCOW CITY GOVERNMENT.

Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov has sued Russia’s First Deputy Premier Anatoly Chubais for saying that Luzhkov’s government was involved in profiteering from the importation of food, Russian radio reported June 12. Last week, Chubais said that Yeltsin’s plan to impose new tariffs on imported food was directed against those–like Luzhkov–who profit from an import monopoly and that such levies would not lead to an increase in prices. Luzhkov replied that the tariffs would lead to higher prices and food shortages and thus would have a negative impact on the elections, at least in the cities. But rural producers might benefit from such tariffs and might express their gratitude in the elections: Russian agrarian trade union chief Aleksandr Davydov on June 11 accused Western companies of dumping outdated and surplus food on the Russian market, Moscow’s Mayak radio said.
