Chechen prime minister Aslan Maskhadov has hinted that he may stand in the presidential election scheduled for January 27. (Interfax, November 25) Maskhadov’s candidacy would be welcomed in Moscow, which sees the former resistance leader as a moderate with whom it can do business more easily than with Chechnya’s more radical leaders.
