Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 120

Russia’s Federal Migration Service this week marked its fifth anniversary. Its president, Tatyana Regent, reports that in the last five years 4.5 million people migrated to Russia from the CIS and Baltic countries, of which 1.2 million were granted "forced migrant" status. The influx has slowed since 1995, amounting to 500,000 persons in 1996 and 200,000 in the first five months of 1997. (Rossiiskie vesti, June 18)
