Although Russia’sdefense industry complex still operates 1800 firms that employ30 million people, production and employment in the sector continuesto fall, Interfax reported July 7. Employment has declined 2.5million since 1990, and production has fallen by more than two-thirdssince January 1994. This year, the state budget calls for spending3.8 trillion rubles–just under $1 billion–to support this sector.
