Russia now ranks third in the world in the rate of suicides among its population, Russian demographers told Vechernyaya Moskva June 6. In 1990, there were 39,150 suicides in the Russian Federation; in 1993, the last year for which data are available, the number had climbed to 56,136. Such deaths reflect broader mental health problems: from 1992 to 1993, the number of Russians seeking psychiatric care rose by 9. 6 percent , with over 3. 6 million receiving treatment in the latter year.
