MOSCOW BEGINS THREE-DAY GALA

. The city of Moscow today began three days of festivities celebrating the 850th anniversary of the city’s founding. President Boris Yeltsin marked the occasion this morning with a special broadcast and Mayor Yury Luzhkov unveiled a huge and controversial statue of Peter the Great on the Moscow embankment. Celebrations will include a street carnival, an open-air opera, and a laser show that will project the image of the Virgin Mary onto the night sky over the Russian capital. (BBC, September 5)
