Publication: Monitor Volume: 1 Issue: 30
Russian nuclear energy minister Viktor Mikhailov said in London June 9 that Russia would proceed with plans to build a nuclear power plant in Iran, Interfax reported. Such a step now would contradict Moscow’s promises at the May 10 summit that Russia would take no action until the sale had been examined by Russian prime minister Viktor Chernomyrdin and US vice president Al Gore. Mikhailov also said that Moscow had secured additional aid from Western sources to upgrade security at three aging Russian nuclear plants and would itself provide Slovakia with a $150 million loan to build a nuclear plant at Mohovce. The New York Times said June 12 that Moscow may back out of a deal to sell the US 500 metric tons of weapons-grade uranium because of disagreements about the price.
