NATIONALIST DECLARES FOR ZYUGANOV.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 66

Petr Romanov, an industrial manager from Irkutsk who is also a member of the Duma and a leading member of the Russian Communist party, announced yesterday that, instead of running for president himself, he will support Gennady Zyuganov’s candidacy. (Russian Television, April 3) Romanov’s supporters had already collected the million signatures required for his registration, but Romanov said he would not submit these to the Central Election Commission. The decision is significant, since Romanov represents the hard-line nationalist wing of the Communist party. It reflects the relative weakness of the nationalist wing following the December elections and will further bolster Zyuganov’s position.
