Publication: North Caucasus Weekly Volume: 2 Issue: 37

There are preliminary reports that a new mass grave containing the bodies of Chechen civilians has been discovered in Djohar. According to a October 14 report by the Australian Broadcasting Company, “Police say the remains of twelve men and women, who apparently were murdered, have been removed.” The pro-Maskhadov website Chechenpress.com wrote on October 15 that more than fifty bodies of brutally murdered civilians, including the bodies of several women and children, had been found in the Avtorkhanovsky District of Djohar. It was noted that detachments of the Russian military had earlier been based near the site of the mass grave. It was also reported that Russian special services and military personnel had surrounded the grave site, with the purpose of hiding the war crimes committed by the military.
