Prima: Chechen Refugees In Ingushetia Have Been Tortured

Publication: North Caucasus Weekly Volume: 5 Issue: 27

Chechen refugees in Ingushetia detained by the authorities since the June 21-22 guerrilla raid have been tortured in order to get them to confess to having helped the guerrillas, according to a June 28 report by the Prima news agency, which specializes in human rights.

“Those who refused to confess were beaten up,” wrote Prima.” They were also verbally abused and were not allowed to use the toilet, being forced to urinate in their cells. Their guards told them that if they found excrement on the floor, the prisoners would be forced to eat it. On one occasion prisoners were forced to jump from the third floor.”
